The Caspian is a small horse standing between 10.2hh and 12.2hh.

The breed was rediscovered by the shores of the Caspian Sea in 1965 and is considered to be the oldest equine in existence apart from the Asiatic Wild Horse.

Although now being bred in the UK, Scandinavia, Australia and USA as well as Iran, they remain relatively few in number. They are predominantly either bay, grey or chestnut and their calm and willing temperament makes them ideal as a lead-rein or first ridden equine. They are co-operative and easy to break both for riding and driving and have been appreciably successful in scurrying. They also have a natural jumping ability.
